Why this project exists

Gold Standard Living is an independent interiors publication and a small workshop collective working out of Johannesburg. We write for renters and first-time homeowners who want a flat that feels finished without throwing out everything already in it.

Most of what we cover comes from the same problem: a room that is nearly right, a piece of furniture that is nearly done, and no clear idea where to start. So the work stays practical. Sanding and oiling an old Oregon pine table. Choosing fabric that survives Highveld light instead of turning grey by the second summer. Drawing a floor plan for a narrow townhouse living room before anything gets moved.

We are not a shop and not a service directory. There are no accounts, no payments, no bookings through the site and no live comment threads. What you find here is editorial work, a gallery of rooms and pieces, and a workshop in Braamfontein where some of it gets tested in person.

What guides the work

  • Keep what is already there Restoration before replacement, especially with solid timber that has outlasted three tenants.
  • Measure before you move Layouts get drawn on paper first, with doors, windows and walkways marked.
  • Buy for the light you have Fabric and finish choices are checked at home, not under shop lighting.
  • Say what we actually know Reader questions go to working carpenters and decorators, and answers stay within what they can stand behind.

An interiors publication with sawdust on its hands

Gold Standard Living is an independent interiors publication and a small workshop collective working out of Johannesburg.

We write for renters and first-time homeowners who want to furnish a flat without replacing everything in it. That usually means one good table, a couch that has already lived a life, and a plan for a room that is narrower than the pictures online suggest.

Our editorial work runs across furniture restoration, sanding and oiling old Oregon pine, fabric selection for Highveld light, small-space layouts for townhouse living, and sourcing second-hand pieces from dealers in Kempton Park and Milnerton. Regular sections include before-and-after room makeovers, beginner tool guides, upholstery basics, and a reader question column answered by working carpenters and decorators.

The visual language stays close to the material: oat, clay and deep green tones, natural daylight on timber and textiles, and hand-drawn floor plan sketches instead of glossy renders.

Gold Standard Living: who we are
  • Independent editorial, not a shop or a catalogue.
  • Written around rental realities and first homes, not showroom budgets.
  • Methods tested on real timber, with the slow parts left in.
  • No accounts, payments, bookings, uploads or live comments on this site.
